I awoke, surprised to find myself inside a large sphere hanging from a tall spruce tree like a giant Christmas-tree ornament. Then it came back. The previous day the creator of the sphere, Tom Chudleigh, had escorted us deep into the forest, up a wooden stairway that spiralled up a spruce tree and across a suspended walkway into a womb-like globe named Eryn.

The cavern stretched up at least three stories high. Without our headlamps, we would have been in utter blackness. Yet with a dozen of us training our lights on the glistening surface, we could easily illuminate impressive sights: rippling flow stones, soda straws, popcorn rock and other colorfully named formations, all made out of creamy white calcite.
